Cam Newton Signs Short-Term Deal with Patriots

Breaking news shakes NFL feeds around the league Sunday night, as free-agent quarterback Cam Newton has agreed to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. It appears that the deal is incentivized, with a maximum of $7.5 million heading the former MVPs way.

Newton is fresh off a few months free agency term (he was released by the Carolina Panthers in March) and will join a Patriots QB room with the likes of Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer. Could Newton be the final piece of the puzzle to fill the void left by six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady? The answer is most definitely not, but it’s an exciting move for a team that lost quite a few key pieces and have now gained an offensive leader this offseason.

The big question is – can Cam stay healthy for a full season? Newton is coming off a foot injury that kept him sidelined for the majority of the 2019 season and quite honestly hasn’t been the same since leading the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2015.

Since he was selected by Carolina as the No. 1 overall pick in 2011, Newton has put together a successful 71-59-1 career record as a starting quarterback. He has thrown for almost 30,000 yards while completing 60% of his passes and throwing for 182 touchdowns. Another strength is his run game, which has become strangely forgotten with the onslaught of mobile qbs that have entered the league over the past five seasons. Newton has rushed for 4,800 yards and 58 touchdowns over the course of his career, catapulting him to the top of the league’s all-time dual threats.

The 31-year-old Newton has posted updates of his workouts via social media during the coronavirus pandemic quarantine.
