NBA and NBAPA Announce HORSE Competition to Provide Relief to Sports World
The NBA and NBA Player’s Association (NBAPA) announced earlier this week that there will officially be an NBA HORSE competition, hosted by ESPN. The eight participants will showcase current players, former players, and WNBA players. Headlined by Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Chris Paul, the challenges will take place in one-on-one formats, with all shots being taken in each player’s isolated home court.
Other participants include WNBA Hall of Famer Tamika Catchings and perennial WNBA All-Star Allie Quigley of the Chicago Sky. Also from Chicago, guard Zach LaVine will represent the Bulls, while Utah Jazz guard Mike Conley Jr. will also lace up after a year filled with being sidelined due to multiple injuries. Finally, the NBA announced that Finals MVPs Chauncey Billups and Paul Pierce will return to the spotlight and see if they can relive their glory days in a time where the sports world needs it desperately.
State Farm will be sponsoring the competition over the next week and a half and will donate more than $200,000 on behalf of the participants to charities focused on coronavirus response efforts. This donation builds on the more than $74 million that has been contributed by the NBA Family to date to support coronavirus relief efforts through its NBA Together campaign.
The participants will be divided into two groups of four, with the winners of the first two games in each group meeting in the semifinals. The winner from each group will move on to the championship round. The ESPN broadcast will air the first round on Sunday, April 12th, and both the semifinal and final rounds on Thursday, April 16th.
